New Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene Programs Receive Approval

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 18, 2011) – Sanford-Brown Institute (SBI) - Fort Lauderdale announced that it has received approval from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and American Dental Association (ADA) for new Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs.  The Dental Assisting with Expanded Functions program is designed to teach chair-side assisting techniques, as well as dental laboratory and office administration procedures to prepare students to work in a variety of dental care environments.

The Dental Hygiene program at SBI - Fort Lauderdale is designed to provide students with a comprehensive plan of studies through classroom and hands-on experience.  Students prepare to become entry-level dental hygienists qualified for employment in clinical practice and alternative career settings.  The first dental hygiene classes are scheduled to begin at SBI - Fort Lauderdale February 7.

“This is exciting news for the students at Sanford-Brown in Fort Lauderdale,” Michael LaBelle, President of SBI - Fort Lauderdale said.  “It continues to raise the academic standards and increase the opportunities for students to pursue careers in oral health, which also will directly benefit our community.”

The new Dental Hygiene program is separate from a Dental Assistant program which SBI - Fort Lauderdale has operated for more than seven years.

"The Dental Hygiene program’s mission is to meet the need for dental hygienists in the state of Florida,” Dr. Hubert Benitez, National Director for Dental Hygiene Programs said. “SBI - Fort Lauderdale’s expanded program allows our students to be part of ADA and ACICS-approved programs.  The program is unique in that it includes community service opportunities to reach underserved and other special populations, and a research component that instills in students critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”
