Sanford-Brown-Skokie to Offer Fitness Trainer Program

August 29, 2012

SKOKIE, Ill., AUGUST 29, 2012 - This fall, Sanford-Brown College (SBC) - Skokie will add a Fitness Trainer certificate program to its curriculum. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for fitness trainers is growing at a faster than average rate. This growth is due in part to a greater focus on fitness and overall health from corporations, the fitness industry, government, and the American public. To help meet this growing demand, Sanford-Brown-Skokie is offering the certificate program in collaboration with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

“The growth of our academic offering and the addition of the Fitness Trainer program are largely due to what we were hearing from the local community,” said Scott Lesht, President of Sanford-Brown College - Skokie. “Fitness is a growing field, and we knew it was critical to align ourselves with NASM, the fitness certification organization that would best prepare our students for a fulfilling career as a professional fitness trainer.”

The program has already begun accepting students. Students who complete the program can learn to perform the following responsibilities of a personal trainer:

  • Conducting accurate fitness assessments
  • Recruiting and retaining clients
  • Developing evidence-based exercise programs
  • Teaching and demonstrating safe and effective  workout techniques
  • Empowering, challenging, and motivating clients toward improved quality of life

Graduates that successfully complete the program and pass the NASM CPT examination should be ready to pursue flexible, exciting careers in the fitness industry, including careers at multi-purpose health clubs, corporate fitness centers, independent business operators, community centers, and more.

“The field of fitness training has a fantastic breadth of career options, this is such an exciting academic offering for the Skokie community,” said Laura Bookman, Fitness Trainer Program Chair at Sanford-Brown Skokie. “Our first class of fitness trainer students will begin their studies in September, so we invite anyone that might be interested to learn more and explore our expanding opportunities.”

Anyone interested in this field should contact Office of Admissions to learn more about the program at 847-983-1200.
