Sanford Brown Tampa Vet Tech Program Participates in HAHF Hillsborough Animal Health Foundation 2nd annual Pit-bull vaccine clinicDr. Gordon Smok, Veterinary Technician (VT) Program Chair at Sanford-Brown Institute (SBI)Tampa campus, volunteered his time and expertise at the 2nd Annual Pit Bull Vaccine Clinic sponsored by Hillsborough Animal Health Foundation (HAHF) and Hillsborough County Veterinary Medical Society (HCVMS) on March 1.

HAHF was founded in 1987 by a community-minded group of Hillsborough County (Tampa/Tampa Bay) area veterinarians to foster the human/animal bond and promote improved pet health and pet care through emphasis on pet owner education and the dissemination of pet information. Their programs and educational efforts are designed to accomplish two critical goals – first, to advance the principles of Responsible Pet Ownership, and second, to see all our four legged friends live as Healthy, Happy Pets. HAHF partnered with Animal Services to provide a micro-chip and vaccine clinic. This effort is part of their ongoing educational program for Responsible Pet Ownership and the principles of AWAKE!

Prior months have seen SBI Tampa’s VT program volunteer at the Animal Coalition of Tampa (ACT) with 'Spay Days'. Where enrolled, VT students have also volunteered alongside Dr. Smok, even before the start of the VT program. Students received first hand exposure to multiple aspects of their chosen career field as well as giving back to the community and caring for the animals within it.

On this particular day, Dr. Smok, together with more than 50 other volunteers gave vaccinations to 171 dogs, as well as provided microchips for 150 dogs. Most importantly, every family was counseled on the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for spaying and neutering their pets. Pictured is the VT Program Director, Dr. Smok, performing exams on 2 patients with volunteers Rebecca Schiess and Taylor Nelson.
