SBI - Pittsburgh veterinary tech students celebrated Earth Day 2010 with a visit to the National Aviary. The National Aviary, our nation's premier bird zoo, is conveniently located across the river from the campus. The environmentally-conscientious students, lead by biology instructor Nancy Sakach, kept the “go green” momentum as they walked twenty five minutes to and from the aviary, collecting trash as they trekked. Their load was rather light, indicating the cleanliness of Pittsburgh streets. Along the path, information stands surrounding the Pirates baseball team’s stadium were full with Earth-friendly educational materials and interesting recyclable items. A colorful “Big Bug” even welcomed them, prompting a photo opportunity! Some of the students’ most memorable experiences at our National Aviary were the personal feeding of wetland birds, the new penguin exhibit, and watching the Peregrine falcon’s eggs hatching live via webcam from the Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh.
