On Tuesday, July 19, 2011, Sanford Brown Institute Austin campus participated in the “Be the Match” program and signed up to be placed on the donor registry. Ms. Murillo’s and Mr. Grover’s classes had 100% participation from eligible donors as well as 100% participation from the academic faculty. Sanford Brown Institute Austin campus students and staff will be participating in local marrow drives to encourage others to become donors as a part of their service learning activities.
The National Marrow Donor Program and the Be the Match Foundation are nonprofit organizations dedicated to creating an opportunity for all patients to receive the bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant they need, when they need it. Every year, thousands of people of all ages are diagnosed with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases. Many of them will die unless they get a bone marrow or cord blood transplant from a matching donor. Seventy percent of people do not have a donor in their family and depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match to save their life.
