Sanford Brown-Tampa - Microsoft DigiGirlz Event

Sanford Brown Tampa Microsoft DigiGirlz EventOn Wednesday, March 20, six SBI Tampa Cardiovascular Sonography students, together with their program Director, Dr. Victor Penna, and instructor Bridget Mazzuco, were invited to participate in a service learning event with Microsoft Corporation. This exciting event, Microsoft DigiGirlz Day, provides young women with career planning assistance, information about technology and business roles, thought-provoking exercises, and interesting Microsoft product demonstrations. By participating in the Microsoft DigiGirlz Day, young women can find out about the variety of opportunities available in the high-tech industry and can explore future career paths.

Five groups of high school girls rotated through multiple stations set up to feature careers which utilize technology. In addition to Sanford-Brown Institute’s Ultrasound demonstration, there were other businesses including ASE Flight Simulators and Xbox Kinect.

During the Sanford-Brown presentation, the Cardiovascular Sonography students demonstrated how to conduct an ultrasound following a brief presentation by Dr. Penna. After the demonstration, each high school student was given an opportunity to scan, guided and assisted by SBI students, who did very well and interacted with young women in every rotation. They were able to clearly demonstrate their skills and share the knowledge they have learned thus far in their programs of study.

This is the second year SBI Tampa has participated in the Microsoft DigiGirlz event, and participation in future events is being planned.
