Bachelor of Science in Visual Communications - Graphic Design (BS)

The Sanford-Brown Bachelor of Science in Visual Communications with an emphasis in Graphic Design explores the fundamental concepts of design and implementing them through a wide variety of real world based projects, culminating in a portfolio unique to each student’s talents.

Sanford-Brown's BS in Visual Communications with an emphasis in Graphic Design challenges students to create images that persuade in ways that words cannot communicate. Working with both traditional media and computer design software, they will explore creative ways of devising logos, trademarks and various types graphic symbols. Successful graduates will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of industry – through design projects, solutions (both functional and aesthetic), delivered within a set amount of time, as judged by critique and rubrics.
  • Apply technical and software skills – through execution of projects that meet defined criteria established by projects, critiques and rubrics.
  • Utilize visual problem solving – through research skills, critical analysis skills, application, and assessment of the design process.
  • Implementation of communication skills – through use of industry relevant vocabulary and professional presentation techniques.
  • Develop conceptual thinking skills – through execution of design projects that build perceptual awareness.
  • Discuss aesthetics – through the use of design elements and principles that exhibit an awareness of design as a cultural element.
  • Prepare for global professional workplace culture – through demonstrated behavior exhibiting an awareness of the designer in a greater world context.
  • Compile and complete portfolio – combining learned skills to produce a portfolio that demonstrates workplace readiness.
  • Articulate a vision of the future of the discipline – identify and suggest implementation modes for emergent trends in design and supporting technology.

Sanford-Brown's BS in Visual Communications with an emphasis in Graphic Design focuses on providing students with a clear understanding of the language and media through which diverse teams of designers communicate and forge a collaborative process, leading to the innovative outcomes that are the product of the Designers work. Courses are led by instructors, many with real-world working experience in the graphic design industry.

  • In Web Design, students will have the opportunity to learn elementary coding using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets, as well as the use of a ‘WYSIWYG’ web layout application (such as Adobe Dreamweaver). Concepts such as effective design, usability, organization of content and web publishing will also be discussed.
  • In Package Design, students explore the possibilities of design that unify multi-dimensional products and the marketing behind the design decisions.
  • In Corporate ID, students are introduced to conceptual thinking and practical application as it applies to corporate identity, including the idea process of identifying target audience, designing an appropriate corporate identity and logotype for business use.

Graduation Rate

A first-time student has no prior postsecondary experience before enrolling at this campus. This means that a student who attended another college, university or other postsecondary school before enrolling at this school is not included in the calculation. The rate also does not include students initially enrolled part-time, taking individual classes (as compared to enrolling in a full program), or only auditing classes. These rates are calculated using the Student Right-to-Know formula in order to comply with U.S. Department of Education requirements. The statistics track all first-time, full-time and certificate or degree-seeking undergraduate students who began school during the date range and have completed within 150% of the normal program length.
