Elizabeth Horton’s Accomplishments Extend Beyond the Classroom
NEW YORK, NY (May 14, 2010) - Elizabeth Horton, a Boulder native and 2001 graduate of September High School, has been named Valedictorian of this year’s graduating class at Sanford-Brown Institute – New York (SBI). She will graduate from the Medical Assistant program on May 14 with a 4.0 GPA and a job at NYU Medical Center already in place.
"I loved Sanford-Brown from the first day," said Horton. "It was a great experience being surrounded by wonderful teachers who genuinely care so much about all the students."
Horton came to SBI – New York after making a life-changing decision to find her "dream" career. She had attended college in Denver, studying aviation and working toward earning her pilot’s license. However, her desire to find her calling, while helping others, eventually led her to travel cross-country.
During her tenure at SBI – New York, Horton not only worked hard in her studies but also became actively involved in extracurricular activities, further enriching her experience. She became president of the student ambassador program, giving her the opportunity to tutor other students, hold fundraisers and participate in community events such as walks for breast cancer and juvenile diabetes.
"We are proud of all the graduating students, especially Ms. Horton," said Daniel Lenzo, President of SBI – New York. "She represents the hard work and determination put forth by every graduate. Today’s demand for highly-skilled healthcare workers is growing and SBI – New York is thrilled to be part of the solution."
Horton will begin her career at NYU Medical Center in Manhattan as Senior Family Group Practice Assistant in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. She completed her externship there and was hired two weeks prior to its end. In her position, she works with and directly assists surgeons during procedures handing them instruments, creating sterile fields and more.
She is also in the process of applying to the Pre-Med program at NYU as she is eligible for full tuition reimbursement through her job. She plans to start classes next spring.
"Attending SBI – New York was the best thing that I have done for myself," said Horton. "I love waking up every day and being able to do something I love and am passionate about. I am so grateful for the experience and for the opportunities it has presented me."
