More Than a Walk in the Park:
SBI-Garden City Students Participate in “Close the Gap” at Eisenhower Park
East Meadow, N.Y. August 25, 2012 - Students from the Medical Assistant Program, one of the Allied Health Programs at Sanford-Brown Institute spent the afternoon at Eisenhower Park participating in NY Call, an outdoor community empowerment fair. They provided blood pressure screening, followed by free medical advice from physicians who volunteered their services for the day with Close the Gap.
“Close the Gap,” is a Boston Scientific health equity initiatives whose mission is to eliminate disparities in care for women and ethnic minorities and provide equitable access to care. Close the Gap’s goal is to provide education about health disparities to health care professionals and to educate patients about the risk factors.
“The call for volunteers to offer blood pressure screening came through SBI’s NYC campus, and and we knew it was a great opportunity to give our students real world, on the job training,” said Lisa Strahs-Lorenc, Director of Community and Alumni Outreach at Sanford-Brown Institute-Garden City. “With very short notice, these students volunteered their time and expertise to give back to the community.”
After only a couple of hours, three students and their instructor Ms. Deborah Artis screened almost 90 individuals. It was a chance to practice professionalism, interacting positively with the participants, and demonstrating their skills and knowledge from their coursework in the Medical Assisting Program.
Students saw first-hand the potential life-saving impact their work can have on community members. One woman, who didn’t take her blood pressure medication in the morning, had high blood pressure numbers that resulted in a medical consultation with the physicians who counseled her on taking her medication.
“We’re so grateful for the Sanford-Brown students who were professional, knowledgeable and friendly to all those they screened,” said Torrie Kuwana, the Field Manager of Close the Gap. “We look forward to additional events that offer mutual benefits for both organizations.”
