How to Build Confidence in Any SubjectPositive Affirmation

Progress always requires stepping outside of your comfort zone. As you enter a new phase of your career, the single most important thing you can do is support yourself. Taking on new challenges — whether they include writing your first paper or grappling with a difficult concept — goes well when you can affirm your effort is meeting your own expectations. This creates a positive environment that will build a solid foundation for your success.

Start Small

The best way to build momentum is to start small. Instead of working long hours, break down your study habits into manageable sections. Try working for 20 minutes at different times throughout the day. This approach takes the pressure off of long study sessions while allowing your mind to process what you absorbed before tackling another section. If you commute to work or have small breaks from daily tasks at home, take that time to review what you just learned.

Ask for Confirmation

Any degree program worth its salt will offer the incredible support of trained faculty. Rather than waiting until an exam or evaluation to find out how you're doing, reach out to an instructor to get feedback on your progress. Checking in with mentors on your own develops positive relationships and gives you consistent affirmation of your efforts. It is a wonderful way to build your confidence in unfamiliar subjects.

Build Relationships

As you start to feel more comfortable with your subject matter, offer it to your classmates. The best way to reinforce your own learning process is to pass it on. The satisfaction of mastering a topic and helping others who are still acquiring it can propel you forward in your chosen field. For online degrees, this kind of collaboration is easy. Make use of message boards and group projects. By setting a precedent of working together, you become a leader in your class.

Thinking about how to build confidence will help you not just in your degree program, but as you build momentum in your career., as well You'll always be learning more, regardless of your chosen field. Knowing how to support yourself and broaden your knowledge base will give you a great advantage as you take the next steps.
