Sanford Brown Dearborn Veterinary Technology Students get a Special Thank You from the Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue

Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue (FMAR) would like to give special thanks to the Sanford-Brown Veterinary Technology program. They are a special group of vets, teachers, and students who have gone above and beyond for FMAR over the past year. The students came to our shelter last summer and stayed the entire day cleaning, socializing, cleaning ears, checking vitals, and even teaching some of our volunteers how to read fecal floats. It was a great day and I think the FMAR volunteers, as well as the students learned a lot from their visit.

When the held trip was over the students were asked to write a paper on how they viewed their experience.

Nicole wrote: I gained insight into how much effort it takes to create a successful animal shelter.
Xiomara wrote: I really enjoyed learning what needs to be done on a daily basis to keep animals at a rescue.
Amanda wrote: I believe the community has benefitted greatly from this place. More people should volunteer for them. It helped me to understand how many animals actually need homes.
Jolene wrote: FMAR happens to be an amazing facility that provides shelter, nourishment, and care for homeless animals, and I can bring my experience from this activity back to the classroom by applying the knowledge I learned.
Sarah wrote: I was able to get hands on experience cleaning and adding drops to the cat's ears. I also learned that Beagles have a lot of energy.
Ashley wrote: I really like helping out FMAR. Getting to watch Dr. Jones perform a physical exam on the animals & using her skill to diagnose and treat them helped to bring everything we've been taught to life.
Carley wrote: FMAR was an amazing experience. We got to see all different breeds of dogs and cats, all shapes and sizes, colors and behaviors.
Brandy wrote: This service learning activity relates to the hard work it takes to keep a building full of animals clean and sanitary. Tiffany wrote: Any opportunity that I can have to help any animal makes me feel better. Sometimes when people see things happening that are good in the community, it inspires them to want to pass along the good.
Katie wrote: We were able to handle cats and dogs of all ages which is a valuable experience we are unable to receive in the classroom. It felt nice to be able to give back by helping the shelter.
Brittany wrote: Volunteers at FMAR let us witness and participate in the husbandry of the cat and dogs. Helping at the rescue we have benefitted the community by helping animals that were abandoned.
Danielle wrote: It was nice to be able to help out and give back to FMAR because they bring in animals for us to learn on. Stacy wrote: Volunteering at FMAR was an eye opening experience. I really saw how much the owners cared about all of their animals.
Heather wrote: Going to FMAR helped understand environmental needs and behavior of cats and dogs.
Raven wrote: I hope to one day be able to educate people about the importance of spaying/neutering, pets so that there will be less on the streets and more being taken care of and loved.
Amber wrote: I have felt uncomfortable with larger breed dogs and I have always been more scared of cats than they are of me. Just spending time with the animals helps us create a closer bond.
Andree wrote: This experience was really amazing to me. It touched my heart being in the room with all of the dogs and cats. I started writing things on Facebook about adopting from FMAR.
Jennifer wrote: I learned about the care and needs to provide each animal the best life possible. I think this would be a good place to work at.

Wow what nice things to say about FMAR! We appreciated the students, teachers, and veterinary staff taking time out of their day to work with us. We hope they enjoyed being here as much as we enjoyed having them work with us for the day.

They dug in and worked like they had been there many times.

Sanford-Brown College has been such a valuable support to FMAR and it is difficult to put into words the gratitude we have for their services. The classroom was there to do blood work, fecal floats, check- ups, testing, x-rays, and much more. Their services would have cost us thousands of dollars, even with the discounts our wonderful veterinarians give us and yet they never charged us. Their follow up in writing and their lab results were almost immediate and their warm perĀ¬sonalities, compassion, and professionalism were impeccable.
