Think about LinkedIn as an online version of your business network. From hosting all your existing business contacts to finding potential new contacts, LinkedIn is one of the best business networking tools you will ever have.

Go through your profile line by line and make sure it is accurate, complete and up-to-date. If you already have a video ad for your business, upload it. If you have received press for previous projects, include links. Start posting updates if you think this will benefit your business and brand — but only if the content is both relevant and share-worthy.

Don't forget to add clear contact details for your business and links to your website and social media accounts. You should constantly find more connections by using the "People You May Know" tab on the site, but don't issue invitations to people you don't already know. Also, use the recommendations provided by LinkedIn on appropriate groups to join.

2. Use LinkedIn as a Research Tool

LinkedIn is not just a place for your professional connections. It is also a vital way to keep track of your competitors and see what they're offering and the projects they're working on. This is one of the best tactics to hone when you are learning how to use LinkedIn effectively as an interior designer. It is also a useful way to stay informed on the activity of your own existing client base. For example, if you see one of your clients is planning a new business venture, reach out and establish whether it will need interior design work. Be proactive about this. Build a lead list by looking at your contacts' connections to see who you're not connected with yet, and monitor their company pages if they are relevant to your business. Use LinkedIn's search function to identify businesses or people in your area that could benefit from your services.

3. Allocate Time and Make It Consistent

Case studies and images are key to showcasing your interior design work on social media. Allocate time for updating your LinkedIn profile every week and providing recommendations and endorsements where appropriate. If you are consistent about this, it will pay off. However, do not spend an unnecessary amount of time on LinkedIn, since doing so could eat into your design time. However, do make sure to allocate a definite amount of time to focus on your profile, updating projects as they are completed, answering LinkedIn requests, making connection requests, researching your competitors and potential leads and updating yourself with the pursuits of your existing client base.

Finally, the last tip for how to use LinkedIn effectively as an interior designer is to mark the achievements of your contacts. If you come across good news or a key business development from a contact or client, share the news through a status update and tag the contact in the post to ensure they are notified of your comment. Nothing spreads faster than good news, and positivity is a strong way to build a brand and business.
