Sanford-Brown Columbus Service Learning Event - Assumption Community Garden

On Thursday August 30, 2012, Christine Laudato, Director of Community and Alumni Outreach received great news regarding a service learning project the Columbus School had participated in.   Christine had met Dr. Job Ebenezer at a Helping Hands Function in Columbus.  She learned of a project he was involved in with Urban Agriculture at the Assumption Lutheran Church on 1421 Morse Road in Columbus.  Job along with members of his church grow food for people in need.  The food is donated to the Helping Hands Health and Wellness Center.  What is unique about the project is that Dr. Ebenezer uses items that are garbage to the average eye, but a treasure to him.  He uses such items as old tires, milk containers, wood from old houses and kiddie swimming pools just to mention a few.
Dr. Ebenezer can turn a roof top, parking lot, or an empty lot in to a fortune of food.

Dr. Ebenezer travels around the world spreading his knowledge and assisting those in needs.  Our hope for this project was to not only to assist Dr. Ebenezer in creating a huge community garden, but to also educate our students in hopes that they could use this to help themselves or their community.

So on Thursday the 30th Christine received a call from Dr. Ebenezer thanking SBC-Columbus for their part in helping Assumption Community Garden in winning the Franklin County 2012 Community Garden of the Year Award.  With this award they received a $500.00 check to continue their efforts!  SBC- Columbus will continue to assist Dr. Ebenezer throughout the year and feel honored to be a part of a world wide project.
