The entire SBI-Jacksonville CVS Day program ‘cohort’ of 12 students and two faculty members participated in the “Give Back a Day Campaign” Wednesday, October 19 at the City Rescue Mission. From 9:00-11:15 am our volunteer service included sorting donated clothing, linens, kitchen items and other merchandise that they sell in their thrift store on Normandy Boulevard to help fund their mission. Their instructions to us were simple, “If you wouldn’t buy it, they won’t sell it.” Whatever they cannot use then gets bundled and shipped to a third world country for refugees and the less fortunate people who have next to nothing. The CVS students were very moved by the experience and the amount of donated items. Many planned to clean out their closets and contribute to the cause by making donations themselves.
From the donation center and thrift store on Normandy Boulevard we traveled to the McDuff Center to serve lunches to the residents of the CRM Rehabilitation Program from 11:30-1:30. Our service included serving meals to students and staff, busing tables and sorting and stocking the pantry. The residents and students and staff at the McDuff Center must have thanked us a thousand times and yet we all felt that we should thank them for helping us realize how fortunate we are and each of us counted our blessings that day. So much so that several of the SBI CVS students pledged to return during the Thanksgiving and/or Christmas holiday to help serve meals to the homeless and residents of the CRM.
