This year’s theme is “Healthy Habits are Easier than You Think.” Through National Dental Hygiene Month, the ADHA aims to promote a healthy mouth. The most important elements to preventing cavities and periodontal disease are following a daily regimen and being sure to schedule your (at least) twice-yearly teeth cleanings and dentist recommended appointments.
An estimated 75 percent of Americans already have some form of periodontal disease – and what’s worse, your overall health is believed to be linked to your oral health. Common health issues like osteoporosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease can all manifest themselves with oral symptoms.
Daily steps you can take to keep your teeth healthy: brush your teeth for two minutes, two times a day (following the correct brushing guidelines and/or with an electronic toothbrush), floss daily, rinse with mouthwash, and chew sugar-free gum after eating.
A proper diet is also vital to maintaining dental health. We all know that sweets containing a lot of sugar can cause and worsen cavities, but did you know there are certain foods you can eat to help build healthy teeth and gums? Dairy products contain calcium and vitamin D, both of which are essential to strengthening and maintaining bone strength. Breads and grains contain iron which is good for blood flow and gum health.
So this October be sure to follow the ADHA recommended daily Dental Hygiene regimen, schedule your annual teeth cleaning, and don’t forget to thank your dental hygienist!
