On October 30, 2011, Sanford-Brown Austin volunteered and participated in the annual Say Boo to Diabetes Walk for a Cure hosted by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). As many as 3 million Americans have type 1 diabetes, a disease that strikes suddenly at any age, lasts a lifetime, and carries the constant threat of deadly complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. The JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Until a cure is found, JDRF is also committed to working tirelessly to develop new and better treatments to improve the lives of people who have type 1 and keep them as healthy as possible. Thanks to dramatic research progress, a cure is now within our reach.
As a new campus to Austin we had 40 student, facility, and staff volunteering various locations throughout the event. Not only was this a service learning project for our students to enhance their soft skills; in communication at the registration table, their compassion at the first aid station, or their accounting abilities in the bank room counting all of the donations that were coming in but also a give back event to support families who deal day in and out with the horrible realities of Type 1 Diabetes.
Prior to the walk we had a guest speaker from the JDRF come and talk to the students about the organization and what roles they would be preforming at the event. They all became extremely interested and wanted to know more about Type 1 Diabetes. From that we have lined up a guest speaker from the local pediatric endocrinology group to come once a quarter to guest speaks on Type 1 Diabetes. This was an awesome event that we have established a wonderful relationship and we will participate with next year and the years to come!
