Sonography, also known as ultrasound scanning or imaging, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure where high-frequency sound waves are applied to parts of the body to produce images of otherwise obscured internal organs and blood flow. While people most commonly associate ultrasounds with prenatal care, it is a widely used medical test that helps medical professionals diagnose and treat tons of different conditions.
Sonography can be used to examine the: uterus, ovaries, liver, kidneys, spleen, thyroid, scrotum, pancreas, gallbladder and bladder. It is useful for seeing the inside of the heart to determine any blockages or abnormal structures, measuring blood flow, detecting kidney stones and identifying cancers early. Ultrasound displays internal images in real time and can be seen in 2D, 3D or 4D (which is 3D ultrasound in motion) so it can also be used to guide other slightly invasive procedures with limited visibility like a needle biopsy or needle aspirations.
It is the simplest and most informative way to examine symptoms of swelling, pain or infection. And does not cause any harm to the patient like the possible radiation from x-rays and other imaging tools. Sonography is widely available and usually covered by insurance, in addition to being less expensive than the alternative CT Scans, X-rays and MRIs.
