Dentistry for the Heart promotes dental care for those who cannot afford the needed care. On a preset day participating Dentists will volunteer their time to perform needed dental procedures on community members who otherwise would not receive the necessary care. It should also be noted that recent medical articles point towards the dental office as a potential venue to screen for medical conditions in patients who otherwise would not be seen by a physician.
Because of this potential to help the local community, SBC - Milwaukee coordinated a SL event for those patients being treated for dental care by offering free health screening for diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure elevations.
Our Medical Assisting Department Head, staff and students preformed the screening procedures for Glucose, Cholesterol and blood pressure readings.
Because of the screening, two patients were found to have significantly elevated blood pressures requiring the dentist to postpone treatment until the blood pressure was controlled by their doctor. Due to significant risks, Dentists will not preform procedures or use medication if patients are found to have blood pressure elevations.
Other patients with elevated blood sugars were referred to physicians for evaluation and control.
