n March 5, a team of five instructors and twenty students from the Dental Assistant program of SBI - Tampa partnered with five dentists from Bauer Dentistry for “Free Dental Day.” The partnership was first suggested by Dental Assistant program graduate Jennifer Baggs (‘08). Carol Taylor, program director, and Tracy Singletary, lead instructor, jumped at the chance to give back to the local community while getting students valuable experience with patients and local dentists.
“Free Dental Day” was a tremendous success. The team helped with dental treatments for more than 100 patients. That work included free cleanings, x-rays, fillings and other dental care. In addition, the story was covered by the local media. SBI-Tampa President Steeve Dumerve did several interviews with Tampa radio and three television stations. We had a total of five TV stories and two radio interviews.
Finally, four of our student volunteers received job offers from dentists working the event, and three dentists opened up their offices to SBI-Tampa for externships.
