Sanford Brown Institute Orlando Holds First Ever Open House/Lab Day

On April 8, a picture-perfect spring day in Orlando, Sanford Brown Institute’s Medical Assisting and Dental Assisting students showcased their skills to the surrounding community. The institute held its first open house/lab day and it was a success! Dr. Sandra Rodriguez, Jennifer Jackson, and Maira Burgos, three of our Medical Assisting instructors, joined in organizing the Open House/Lab Day. The more they planned, the more the students and faculty became excited. What was originally intended to be a school-only event turned out to be a community happening.

Ideas poured in from students and faculty and before long, flyers were created and groups were formed to distribute them to the surrounding homes and businesses. Students, along with faculty, invited members of the community to attend. Area businesses and residents learned about the school and many promised to attend the planned event.

Students and faculty produced posters, brochures, bookmarks, and an event “passport." Faculty members outlined the events for the day and students were placed in teams and assigned specific duties for the event. As members of the public arrived at the school, they were greeted by students who directed them to a sign-in table where they were given their “passport” for entrance to the various medical stations. The community was provided an opportunity to be educated on blood glucose, cardio, respiratory, nutrition, safety, personal protection, and oral health.

The team of students and faculty provided escorts from station to station with the medical passport provided. A special “Kids Kare” station for children was setup to share healthy habits with children while their parents moved among stations. Students were assigned to help them color pictures related to health, make a special trail mix, served them fresh popcorn, and provided a goodie bag for them to take home.

In the first module, students assisted in creating wonderful and tasty smoothies for visitors to enjoy. In the second module, students participated in taking vital signs of all those who attended. In the third module, visitors were educated on health and nutrition. During the fourth module, instructors watched as students performed successful blood glucose testing on the visitors. There was also a demonstration of personal protective equipment and safety information. As an added bonus, the dental assisting students and faculty did an excellent job of demonstrating oral health care and showed products of dental hygiene to all those who attended the open house.

There was a definite sense of pride among our students at what they accomplished that day as the people of the community expressed their gratitude for the invitation extended to them by the school and how impressed they were at their experience. It was indeed a proud moment for the campus president, senior managers, faculty, staff and students at the tremendous success of this first open house/lab day. We are ready for a repeat, especially since it was requested by members of the community.
