New President Christina Gaza Expands Offerings to Students Working Toward Health Careers

Sanford-Brown Institute (SBI) – Cranston recently launched three new, healthcare certificate programs, expanding options for students seeking careers in the healthcare field. Sanford-Brown Institute – Cranston, formerly known as Gibbs College, is part of the Sanford-Brown post-secondary education system, which includes 31 campuses operating as Sanford-Brown Institute or Sanford-Brown College across the U.S. The new offerings are: Pharmacy Technician, Medical Billing and Coding and Medical Assisting. Classes began Monday.

Rhode Island recorded the third highest unemployment rate in the nation for January behind Michigan and Nevada, according to a report released March 10 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/laus.nr0.htm). Jobs in the healthcare field, however, have steadily increased despite the decline in employment in other industries.

“It is our goal to prepare SBI students for the workforce by helping them become confident, trained healthcare professionals who are committed and patient-focused,” said Sanford-Brown Institute – Cranston President Christina Gaza.

The Pharmacy Technician program provides students with the technical and practical training necessary for work as an entry-level assistant to a licensed pharmacist. Students will study pharmacy computing, medication preparation, inventory and billing.

The Medical Billing and Coding program is designed to prepare students for careers in a variety of healthcare settings, including medical offices, hospitals, clinics and skilled-care facilities. The curriculum includes instruction in several areas, including, but not limited to, billing practices and systems, coding and reimbursement systems, data abstracting, health record maintenance or healthcare computer applications.

The Medical Assistant program at Sanford-Brown prepares students to assist medical providers by performing administrative duties and basic clinical duties in an office and/or medical center.

Christina Gaza assumed the role of president of the Cranston campus in early February. Gaza brings with her more than 15 years experience in higher education management. She previously served as Vice President of Student and Career Services at Gibbs College of Boston.

Gaza will oversee the day-to-day operations, admissions and recruitment at the Cranston campus, while ensuring a student-centered learning environment.

“We are pleased to have someone with Christina’s experience and knowledge leading our Cranston campus through this period of growth and transition,” stated Tom O’Donnell, vice president, Start Up Division, Career Education Corporation. “Christina will be an invaluable asset to the Sanford-Brown family and will undoubtedly ensure that the Cranston campus remains an exceptional educational environment for our students.”
