On Saturday, April 17, the students and faculty of Sanford-Brown College hosted a Chili Cook-off at the Painted Parrot restaurant in West Allis. All proceeds from the event went toward the University of Chicago: Celiac Disease Center. Sanford-Brown, a college for healthcare career training, selected the Celiac Disease Center in order to raise awareness and money for a disease that is not well known. Some quick facts about it:
A 100% gluten-free diet is the only existing treatment for celiac today.
One in 133 Americans have celiac disease.
Three million Americans across all races, ages and genders suffer from celiac.
95% of celiacs are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions.
Those attending the event had an opportunity to receive door prizes and taste the contestants’ chili. More than 20 individuals from the school and community participated in the event.
