On Friday, Feb. 5, SBI-Tampa Dental Assisting students donated their time to assist in the American Dental Association’s (ADA) "Give Kids a Smile" campaign at the Wilbert Davis Boys & Girls Club in East Tampa. Thirteen of SBI’s dental students were on board to lend a helping hand to local dentists Dr. Gail McDonald, Dr. William Marsh and Dr. Clarence McNair as they provided brief exams for each child, checking for cavities or other irregularities. In addition to helping chair-side, the students educated the children on proper dental hygiene and demonstrated proper brushing techniques. Children from all over the Tampa Bay area were helped at this annual volunteer event, and SBI-Tampa plans to participate in next year’s event as well.
SBI-Tampa participated as part of the ADA’s Give Kids a Smile national campaign, along with thousands of the nation's dentists and their dental team members from across the country. The goal of this event, held on the first Friday in February each year, is to provide free oral health care services to children from low-income families across the country, enhance the oral health of large numbers of needy children and highlight the ongoing challenges that low-income families face in finding dental care so that policy makers can be more informed. This year over 2,000 events were hosted across the United States serving over 325,000 children.
