SBC Cleveland - Walks in the Shoes of the Blind, And Helps Raise Money for The Cleveland Sight Center

Sanford Brown College recently supported numerous student volunteers for the White Cane Walk fundraiser at the Cleveland Sight Center, an organization that delivers services to people who are visually impaired and blind throughout northern Ohio. The event was held at The Crocker Park Shopping Center in Cleveland. Students, staff, and teachers of the Berea, OH campus helped with such events as blind folding people and helping them shop, so as to experience what it would be like to shop and eat blind. With the help of Sanford Brown, attendees at the shopping center learned about blindness and blind etiquette when interacting with a blind or visually impaired person. In addition, students, staff and attendees alike learned about the White Cane Law, which states that anyone using a white cane has the right of way to streets and sidewalks, without the hindrance of a driver.
The White Cane Walk raised over $40,000 in support of the work the Cleveland Sight Center performs for its clients and mission. As Alicia Howerton, Cleveland Sight Center’s Volunteer Coordinator stated, “We wouldn’t have had nearly the success of this campaign without the assistance and support of Sanford Brown, and for that, we send out a big Thank You.”
Due to the success of this great event, the Berea Campus of Sanford Brown, and the Cleveland Sight Center are working on a partnership in which students at Sanford Brown will begin performing Vision Screenings for pre-schools and day cares throughout northern Ohio. The goal is to offer 14,000 children between the ages of 3 and 6 the opportunity to be screened and tested for numerous eye diseases, which caught at an early age, would offer better chances of corrective action, and limited long term vision loss.
