SBC Cleveland Welcomes Guest Speaker Chris Jerry of the Emily Jerry Foundation

Many of you may have heard the story of Emily Jerry. She was killed by a mistake of a pharmacy technician, and her death is the reason there has been a change in legislation of technician certification requirements in Ohio. Her father, Chris Jerry, started the Emily Jerry Foundation, raising awareness and helping to create protective measures to prevent the occurrence of medication errors. We have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to have Chris Jerry speak to our students. Not only is her story important for future pharmacy technicians, but anyone with a future in the medical field as well.
Mr. Jerry is advocating both for patient safety, and to help medical workers that have committed mistakes. His message is that by criminalizing caregivers who have committed an error, we will have a harder time getting workers to admit to future mistakes for fear of punishment, and thus have a harder time learning where the problems are in the system and how to correct them. He advocates for a goal of 100% accuracy for medication errors.
The Pharmacy Technician students felt the call for action and through a number of fundraising projects were able to raise and donate $1100 to the Emily Jerry Foundation.
