Sanford-Brown supports the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

July 26, 2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990, the ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. With this landmark piece of legislation, the ADA broke down barriers to allow persons with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of our communities. It affords similar protections against discrimination to Americans with disabilities as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. People with disabilities gained equal access to such public accommodations as education, restaurants, hotels and transportation, and the ADA’s employment provisions significantly increased opportunities to enter the work force.
Today, nearly 49 million Americans live with some form of a disability. As the largest minority group in the country, it is imperative that society be oriented about the unique issues relative to this population. As current and future members of the healthcare community, the Sanford-Brown students, faculty and staff believe it is our responsibility to treat others – especially those under our care – with respect and common courtesy, no matter what. It is also important to demonstrate our commitment to eroding stereotypes and educating both our students and community about people with disabilities.
So Sanford-Brown – our students, our faculty and our staff – and our affiliated schools are proud to join so many others in recognizing, honoring and celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. As part of this effort, Sanford-Brown campuses are joining the 2010 by 2010 Campaign to get 2,010 Proclamations of Recommitment (“A Proclamation of Recommitment to Full Implementation of the ADA”) signed by Monday, July 26, 2010. We encourage you to visit this website, print the Proclamation, sign it, fax it back and join the thousands of other voices throughout the nation lending their support.
In addition, many of our campuses will be holding events, conducting sensitivity trainings, giving discussions, having guest speakers make presentations on campus or partnering with our organizations within their broader communities.
