In late December, Danielle Coffaro (Anesthesia Tech Facilitator) and Students from the Sanford-Brown Iselin campus, conducted a community service event in the form of a Winter Wear Drive, where hats, gloves, and scarves were collected for 106 children presently residing in a Battered Women’s Shelter in New Jersey. The drive was a complete success due to the monumental effort put forth by the students, and the drive opened up the door for the students to participate in a Service Learning opportunity which will be held on January 24, 2011. The founder of the shelter, Ms. Sandra Ramos, will be coming to Sanford-Brown to host an interactive session on battered women and children. The enlightening dissertation that will be imparted to the students will provide valuable tips and insight as to how to handle women and children that have had to suffer the worse forms of both physical and mental abuse. Such instruction can be invaluable to those students, that may in the discourse of their respective medical work history encounter such individuals that will need the special attentions and sensitive handling that may in due course lead to the healing processes any of these individuals may have to undergo.
In mid-December both Danielle Coffaro and Dana Reed (Sr. Representative of Career Services) made a visit to the shelter where they had a chance to observe the living conditions now encompassing these once persecuted individuals, and the courage that both the women and the children now show in the face of their long climb back up the mountain of their despair, and the march they face daily in the preservation of their dignity and hope. By instituting and participating in programs which could enhance this shelters ability to further their efforts, Danielle and Dana have opened the door to future events that can be held, and to further successes that will propagate and propel these people forward to once again lead a more productive and fulfilling life.
