Sanford Brown Tampa Pharmacy Technician Students Take a Tour Through Omnicare Long Term Care PharmacyOn Wednesday, November 13, students in Ryan Yoho’s PT141 class took a field trip to the Omnicare long-term care pharmacy in Tampa. Omnicare has been a member of the campus’s Advisory Board since the inception of the Pharmacy Technician program in 2006 and is one of the program’s premier externship sites.

For this field trip, the students arrived at noon and were greeted by Regina, who prepared them for the tour and provided information on the front-end aspect of the pharmacy. The class was then introduced to the billing department where phone calls are taken and orders are sent to the filling department.

The next portion of the tour took place in the warehouse, where students were shown the automation and control cage, followed by another area designated the “horseshoe,” where pre-filled cards are marked according to their prescriptions and sent to the designated long-term care facilities.

The class learned about the return process and what causes items to be returned before ending their tour in the returns department.

In addition to the comprehensive facility tour, visiting students were able to meet with current Sanford-Brown Omnicare externs and left the field trip with a greater understanding and appreciation for working in a long term care pharmacy such as Omnicare.
