Service Learning activities at SBC – Grand Rapids for the month of June have included several events with Michigan Blood/MIBlood. This growing partnership with sponsored events has allowed students, faculty, management and staff along with the general public to support a mission of service.
The Bone Marrow Registry Drive held June 21, was a campus event and community affair to draw more than 59 registrants. Ms. Kona Kenny the Stem Cell Program Administrator with the MIBlood Association of West Michigan is primarily responsible for coordinating events in the area and was more than surprised at the campus participation and community involvement. The event as organized was open to the public and a great success.
Instructors Michelle Bagley and Steven Smith were on hand to assist in facilitating students engaged with the Service Learning component for the event. Student participants assisted donors and provided registry information. There was also a service team on hand for vital checks and to provide after care. This summer SBC Grand Rapids and MIBlood have upcoming events planned. There will be more news to come on these collaborative efforts.
