Sanford‐Brown Institute – Jacksonville Makes Higher‐Ed Attainable for Active Duty Military, Vets and Military Spouses

September 15, 2009

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – (September 15, 2009) – Sanford‐Brown Institute (SBI) – Jacksonville today announced three efforts to assist service men and women who wish to go to school: the Military Appreciation Program, the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Program, and the Yellow Ribbon Program.

The Military Appreciation Program (MAP) is a unique grant provided by SBI‐Jacksonville for active‐duty military men and women who wish to further their education. Through the end of 2009, a total of nine individuals will be eligible to receive a grant of approximately $5,500 toward a diploma in the Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, or Pharmacy Technician programs each term. Space is limited and grants are awarded on a first‐come, first‐packaged basis to the first nine applicants who meet the institutional grant criteria that may be obtained from the SBI Financial Aid Office.

"I have friends serving in the military around the world who have put their lives on hold and on the line to fight for what we all believe in," said Scott Nelowet, president of SBI‐Jacksonville. "In our own way, we at Sanford‐Brown champion the cause of education, and I can think of no more deserving group to benefit with the freedom that education can provide than our friends and family in the armed forces."

In addition to MAP, SBI‐Jacksonville is also a participant of the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Program (MSCAAP). This program provides up to $6,000 in financial assistance for active duty, National Guard, and reservist spouses pursuing portable careers. This is a federal program and only select schools are participating. Eligible spouses can get information and apply online at: https://aiportal.acc.af.mil/mycaa/default.aspx.

Finally, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has given approval for the school to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program under the Post‐9/11 GI Bill. The Yellow Ribbon Program became effective on August 1, 2009 and SBI – Jacksonville is enrolling veterans for its September/October academic session. Under the Post‐9/11 GI Bill, based on the eligibility of the veteran or active duty service member, the VA will pay tuition and fees benefits up to each state's highest public undergraduate tuition per credit hour and fees per term. Participants in the Post 9/11 GI Bill may also be eligible for a monthly housing allowance and benefits toward books and supplies.
