SANFORD-BROWN FACULTY AND STUDENTS RAISE THOUSANDS FOR LOCAL CHARITY

3rd Annual Ryan’s Quest Walkathon draws hundreds from Iselin and surrounding communities

ISELIN, NJ (August 30, 2010) –  Students, faculty and staff from Sanford-Brown Institute (SBI) – Iselin raised $8,000 for muscular dystrophy research as part of the third annual walkathon to benefit local nonprofit Ryan’s Quest.  The volunteer-driven event had more than 400 walkers and local business leaders attend, in addition to the parents of five-year old Ryan Schultz – the nonprofit’s namesake.

The event held at Roosevelt Park in Edison received support from the local firehouse and community facilities, Liberty Mutual, Retro Fitness and Gill Gaters.  Sanford-Brown Institute – Iselin has raised more than $29,000 for Ryan’s Quest since 2008.

"Our students, faculty and staff are once again honored to help build awareness and raise funds for such a wonderful organization and cause as Ryan’s Quest," said Dennis Mascali, president of Sanford-Brown Institute – Iselin.

Ryan’s Quest is a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 by David and Maria Schultz after their two-year old son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is the most common lethal genetic disorder diagnosed during early childhood, affecting one out of every 3,500 boys.  It is a progressive muscle disorder that causes the loss of muscle function and independence.  Typically, boys affected by DMD will lose their ability to walk between the ages of 8 and 14, require respiratory support by their late teens and only survive into their twenties.  To date, there is no cure.

"The sole purpose of Ryan’s Quest is to raise awareness and funding for research that has the greatest promise of saving Ryan and other boys with DMD," said David Schultz. "We can’t do that alone.  The Sanford-Brown team has always been a great partner and once again, we appreciate their leadership in helping to raise awareness for this important cause."
