Name change signals Grand Rapids campus’ transition to conferring associate degrees

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (September 13, 2010) – The Grand Rapids campus of Sanford-Brown officially became Sanford-Brown College (SBC) today, reflecting the State of Michigan’s recent decision to give the campus authority to confer associate degrees in addition to the current diplomas offered. This will open the door to the addition of more degree-granting programs available at the college. Early next year, SBC – Grand Rapids has plans to launch two new associate degree programs: Cardiovascular Sonography and Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The programs run 70 and 80 weeks, respectively, which is accelerated in comparison to the sonography programs offered at other institutions.

"It has always been our intention to expand our program offerings and we are very pleased to be able to do so within a year of our opening," said Sanford-Brown College – Grand Rapids President Rick Amidon. "The response from the community has shown the need for training in the allied health professions and so we will work to provide a wider range of opportunities for prospective students."

With the rollout of the new imaging programs next year, Sanford-Brown will also introduce the Simpro Virtual Trainer™ in Grand Rapids and at its campuses nationwide that offer imaging programs in cardiovascular sonography and diagnostic medical sonography. Sanford-Brown partnered with New Zealand-based SIMTICS, a leader in virtual simulation technology for healthcare education, and co-developed this product to improve learning outcomes and help students confidently meet the high standards of the healthcare industry.

"We intend for the Simpro Virtual Trainer to enhance and complement existing, proven training methods inside the classroom and at clinical sites in our cardiovascular sonography and diagnostic medical sonography programs," said Amidon.

The Simpro Virtual Trainer breaks down each clinical procedure into its component steps, requiring students to make decisions about what to do next, which instrument to use and where to apply it. It will make procedures more accessible, helping students gain and retain critical information without being solely dependent on patient cases during their clinical experience. An online video is available at www.sanfordbrown.edu. Established in Illinois in 1866, Sanford-Brown has one of the longest tenures of any business education institution in the United States. Today, there are 15 Sanford-Brown Colleges and 16 Sanford-Brown Institutes across the U.S., with more than 28,000 students currently enrolled.
