Appointment of Derek McBeth comes as school celebrates first anniversary

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (December 7, 2010) – Sanford-Brown College (SBC) - Grand Rapids, a career-focused institution offering allied heath degrees and diplomas, has appointed Derek McBeth as its new president.  In his role, McBeth will oversee the day-to-day operations, admissions and recruitment at the Grand Rapids campus, while ensuring a student-centered learning environment. 

The announcement of McBeth’s hiring comes as SBC - Grand Rapids celebrates its first anniversary.  The campus opened its doors on November 23, 2009 as Sanford-Brown Institute but has since changed its name to Sanford-Brown College to reflect the State of Michigan’s decision to give the campus authority to confer associate degrees in addition to the diplomas offered.  Today, the campus has more than 400 students working toward diplomas in medical assisting and medical billing and coding, and associate degrees in cardiovascular sonography. 

Derek McBeth brings 12 years of higher education experience to his new role.  Prior to joining SBC - Grand Rapids, he spent two years as president of Herzing University in Toledo, Ohio, where he served in several capacities since 1998.  While at Herzing McBeth oversaw the first college build in 40+ years for the Herzing system, grew a campus from zero students to more than 270 in less than 10 months, as well as planned and developed new programs.

“Derek’s talents and proven track record of ensuring that students receive a quality educational experience will be a great asset to Sanford-Brown,” said Tom O’Donnell, vice president of operations for the Health Education Strategic Business Unit of Career Education Corporation, parent company of Sanford-Brown schools. 

In its first year in operation, SBC - Grand Rapids expanded its course offerings to include the cardiovascular sonography (CVS) program.  One of McBeth’s first tasks as president will be to lead the upcoming launch of the diagnostic medical sonography program (DMS).  Both CVS and DMS are associate degree programs and run 70 and 80 weeks.
