Healthy Shopping:  SBI-Garden City Students Offer Shoppers more than Bargains
Garden City, N.Y., August 25, 2012
– Students from three of Sanford-Brown’s Allied Health Programs—Medical Assistant, Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound and Non-Invasive Cardio-Vascular Technology – stepped out of the classroom to educate shoppers at Roosevelt Field Mall about  the risks of high blood pressure, raising awareness for breast cancer, and offering free blood pressure screenings.

“The first hurtle was learning how to approach shoppers so that they would be willing to have their blood pressure checked – a skill akin to a nurse’s bedside manner,” said Lisa Strahs-Lorenc, Director of Community and Alumni Outreach at Sanford-Brown Institute-Garden City. “Under the careful watch of their instructors, the 30 students screened 162 local shoppers, which we consider to be a great success for the education of our local community.”

Additionally, the Non-Invasive Cardio-Vascular Technology students handed out 300 flyers explaining the importance of knowing your blood pressure and educated the shoppers exactly what the numbers mean. Shoppers also discussed breast cancer screenings with the students and were given valuable information by the Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound students.

For many of the Sanford-Brown students, this was the first time using their skills in a “real world” setting. This is not the first time SBI-Garden City has visited the mall, however. Ms. Suzanne Allen, Program Director of the Medical Assisting Program has arranged this service learning experience at least 2 other times.

“Thank you to Roosevelt Field Mall management that understands the value both for the shoppers and for the students,” said Strahs-Lorenc. “It’s a win-win situation: shoppers receive free education about their health and students have the chance to apply their classroom knowledge in the community.”
