Sanford-Brown Campuses Nationwide to Participate in First-Ever "Give Back Day"

More than 30 campuses across the country to provide free health services in their communities.

Hoffman Estates, Ill., (October 6, 2010) – Sanford-Brown, a leading provider of healthcare education, announced that students from all of its affiliated campuses will participate in a nationwide "Give Back Day" on October 20, 2010. Sanford-Brown’s Give Back Day, which coincides with National Medical Assistant Recognition Day, will allow medical assistant students at each of the campuses, as well as students in other programs, faculty and staff, to demonstrate the positive impact they can make as a team in their local communities.

Activities occurring on various campuses include blood and bone marrow drives, general health screenings, vision screenings, athletic screenings, and pet screenings. Activities that students and faculty will participate in off-campus include volunteering at nursing homes, shelters, food banks and clinics.

Sanford-Brown is also launching a Service Learning component to each curriculum at each campus. This enhancement to curricula is intended to provide an opportunity to engage students in the educational process by requiring them to apply their classroom learning to help solve real-life problems. The curriculum will require each student to participate in Service Learning once per quarter. This will be initiated in the Medical Assisting program in 2010 but it is expected to be part of nearly every program at each campus nationwide as of 2011.

"The combination of experiential learning and community service will help students see first-hand how their efforts benefit those around them," said George Grayeb, senior vice president of the Health Education Strategic Business Unit of Career Education Corporation, parent company of Sanford-Brown schools. "This will help students become active, contributing citizens and community members even before they graduate from Sanford-Brown."

Each Service Learning project will demonstrate skills learned in the classroom based on the student’s specific program. For example, a student in the medical assistant program might work at a blood drive, flu shot clinic and/or vision screening while a student in the pharmacy technician program could provide poison prevention education to local youth organizations and/or assistance in disposing of expired prescriptions. Similarly, a student in any of Sanford-Brown’s veterinary technology programs would focus his or her efforts on animals and pet owners while a student in a dental assistant program would provide dental screenings or other dental services to those who are disadvantaged. At the end of any Service Learning activity, students will reflect in writing and presentations how the activity related to their program and benefitted the communities they serve.
