Sanford-Brown Institute -Tampa Helps Spread Free Smiles!
February 8, 2013
On February 8, 2013, 14 students across several programs participated in a service learning event with “Dentistry from the Heart,” a non-profit organization dedicated to helping to communities in 49 states and Canada receive free dental care. Every year, individual dentists and practices across the country donate their time and resources to host their own DFTH events which are supported by the organization. Dentistry from the Heart serves to recruit, unify, and promote events on a national level.
The February event was held at the offices of Dr. Vincent Monticciolo, DMD who founded Dentistry from the Heart more 12 years ago. He and his staff, together with other area dentists, provided dental extractions, fillings and cleanings free of charge to the first 300 participants. Members of the community, who would otherwise not be able to afford the services, were lined up the night before to secure their spot in line. Beginning early that morning, staff and volunteers worked tirelessly until 5 pm and beyond, serving more than 300 people during the course of the day.
Sanford-Brown Institute's student volunteers served in many capacities, including translation for Spanish speaking patients, crowd control, triage, sterilization of dental instruments, patient care and treatment room preparation/clean up. Massage Therapy students also performed free seated massages to volunteers and staff. The event provided the students with real-world experience in the fields for which they are studying.
SBI-Tampa is honored to have been involved in this event and continues to work with Dentistry from the Heart as an ongoing partner for future events.
